It is with great sadness that Postcards from Europe announces the recent, sudden death of Robert Schuck from a heart attack. A founder-member of the project, he was a driving force in researching much of this ‘lost’ music. His fluency in several languages, including Czech, enabled him to trawl archives and libraries across Europe and draw on information from a wide circle of contacts, both musical and cultural. His passion, enthusiasm, learning and understanding will be deeply missed, but Postcards from Europe will continue, with Marianne Olyver on the violin and a range of new pianists.
Robert studied with Peter Gellhorn, at the Royal Academy of Music, and at King's College, London, and was awarded an Italian Government Scholarship to the Accademia Musicale Chigianna. He enjoyed a wide range of work as a pianist for instrumentalists, singers and for dance. He was a staff accompanist at Dartington International Summer School and was invited by Sir Charles Mackerras to be his assistant and repetiteur for Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the reopening of the Prague Estates Theatre – Mozart Bicentennial Celebrations. He taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
